Job Description

As a High Court Legal Practitioner, your primary responsibility will be to provide legal representation to indigent accused persons at High Court level. Your role will involve the handling of complex criminal High Court matters, requiring strong legal expertise and attention to detail. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Legal Representation: Represent indigent individuals accused of crimes at the High Court level, ensuring that justice is served for those unable to afford private legal counsel.
  • Handling Complex Criminal Cases: You will manage complex and high-profile criminal cases, requiring detailed knowledge and expertise in criminal law.
  • Training and Supervision: You will mentor and supervise Candidate Attorneys, providing valuable training and guidance.
  • Office Administration: Perform necessary administrative duties associated with legal work.
  • Representation for Vulnerable Groups: Represent women, children, and landless individuals in criminal matters, ensuring that the most vulnerable members of society receive proper legal attention.

Key Competencies

Applicants must meet the following qualifications and competencies to be considered for the position:

  • Admitted Attorney or Advocate: Applicants must be either admitted attorneys or advocates. If applying as an advocate, candidates must have successfully completed their pupillage at a recognised institution.
  • High Court Experience: You must have a proven track record in handling criminal matters at the High Court level, with a minimum of four (4) years of direct High Court experience or six (6) years of Regional Court experience.
  • Minimum Experience: A minimum of seven (7) years post-qualification experience, with at least five (5) years being post-admission experience.
  • LLB Degree: A Law degree (LLB) is required as the foundational qualification.
  • Right of Appearance: Applicants must have the right to appear in the High Court.
  • Other Skills:
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Analytical thinking.
    • Ability to work well in a team.
    • Self-development orientation.
    • A valid driver’s licence is advantageous.

Salary

The position offers an attractive salary package at LP-7 level, with an all-inclusive annual remuneration of R884,268.00.
